LOS ANGELES – Second District Councilmember Paul Krekorian on Tuesday, March 8, released the following statement on a series of proposals the City Council adopted to transfer more than $1 billion from the Community Redevelopment Agency to the City of Los Angeles:
“Today, we were asked to decide on whether to encumber more than a billion dollars of public funds now held by the Community Redevelopment Agency. The CRA’s proposals included a set of projects that will affect the city for decades to come, and would have fundamentally restructured redevelopment financing in ways not yet fully explained. The CRA has the important mission of reducing blight and creating economic opportunity - aims that are vital to the renewal of neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles, including my council district.###
“However, any decision of this magnitude deserves a thorough analysis by the public and the City Council – an analysis that would be impossible to complete in the expedited process in which this proposal was rushed before us. Because this proposal was presented on a special agenda with less than 24 hours notice, neither the public nor the Council had adequate opportunity to sift through mountains of information and consider all the issues at stake. I was elected to ask tough questions and ensure accountability and transparency, and because today’s process did not allow that, I had no choice but to vote no. Any issue considered by the Council, particularly one of this importance, requires a fully vetted, completely transparent and carefully considered discussion.”
