LOS ANGELES - Councilmember Paul Krekorian introduced a motion Wednesday that provides a one-year extension for pending Solar Incentive Program applications by the Los Angeles Unified School district, which will allow two LAUSD facilities to move forward with plans to install rooftop solar panels.

The motion would allow the facilities to proceed with their application for $4.4 million in rebates to improve efficiency and install renewable technology at John H. Francis Polytechnic High School in Sun Valley and the LAUSD’s Local District 5 Administrative Office.

“Rooftop solar energy presents a tremendous opportunity for our school district to address its tremendous budget shortfall by reducing electricity costs,” said Councilmember Paul Krekorian, chairman of the Education and Neighborhoods Committee and a member of the Energy and Environment Committee. “At the same time, this program helps the DWP reduce its reliance on coal, improves air quality and encourages the creation of good ‘green’ jobs in Los Angeles. With this motion, the school district will be able to apply for vitally necessary financing to advance its commitment to sustainability, which will put more money in the classroom and send a powerful message to our children about their role in preserving our environment and our world.”

The motion first heads to the Energy and Environment Committee before it returns to the City Council for a vote.
